Tips To Keep Your Knees Healthy And Strong

Tips To Keep Your Knees Health...

Knees are the largest joints of your body. Ironically, it also the joint which starts wearing out the first. But it’s not very odd if you think about it – your knees carry almost all of our body weight when you are walking, or standing, or running, or jumping, or basically, doing anything when on your feet.

So, if you have a weak knee, imagine how hugely it will impact your daily life. No walking or even difficulty in walking can make your life very stagnant.

Knee joint pain

These days, a majority of the population is adapting to a fast food diet and a desk job, making obesity dominate over a major portion of the metropolitan mass. A higher upper body weight is exerting higher pressure on your knees making them weaker even sooner.

This is why, it is crucial now that we consciously put some effort to know how to keep knees healthy and work on them effectively.

Here are a few tips on how to keep knees healthy.

  • Diet: First things first, keep your weight in check. Have a healthy diet. It saves you from a lot of health trouble. Putting an extra effort for it, despite your busy lifestyle, is worth it.
  • But for knees or joints in particular, calcium-rich food like low-fat milk, beans, lentils, almond etc. can be very beneficial. Fatty fish is a good source of Omega 3 and green leafy vegetables hold good amount of vitamins. They are both good for your knees.  Try and avoid fermented food like curd, beer, etc., aerated drinks, foods that contain trans fat, etc.
  • Exercise: The tip for  how to keep knees healthy would be to know the balance of exercises. Don’t freeze your knees in front of your computer and don’t obsess over gyming. To keep your knees healthy, talk to an expert to know which exercises for knees are suitable for you and how long you should perform them.
  • Water: Knees are guarded by cartilages. Cartilages can be made of up to 80% of water. When you are dehydrated, the cartilages become brittle. Weak cartilages cannot make good guards to your knees. So, stay hydrated, always! Now you know how to keep knees healthy.
  • Posture: Posture is very important when it comes to the knees. With the wrong posture, you can hurt your knees even when you are sitting (and probably thinking that you are relaxing your knees). Especially in a country like India, where the common practise is to sit with you calves tucked below your thighs or where you squat in your toilet, knees are undoubtedly overstressed. Keep your knees relaxed when you are sitting or lying down.
  • Safety measures: Abiding by the safety measure is a crucial tip for how to keep knees healthy. Even one injury in the knee can have drastic impacts on your life.
    – If you are an athlete or a sportsperson, abide by you safety measures.
    – Wear healthy, comfortable footwear.
    – Avoid walking through a rough road continuously.
    – Climb but don’t bounce up and down the stairs.
    – Never exercise through pain.
  • Supplements: As you get older, so will your knees. After 30 years of age, it’s best to consult a doctor to know if you need any supplements to keep your knees strong. Calcium pills and Omega 3 supplements can keep your knee strong for an extended amount of time.
  • Doctor: Unless injured externally, knee degrades very slowly. The pain also grows very gradually. This is why sometimes a person learns to live with the pain. But it is very harmful for the knee. Even a ligament tear might not show symptoms immediately. Hence, it is highly advisable that you consult a doctor if you experience any pain or discomfort or any other oddity around your knees.

Reading about how to keep knees healthy one day and following the tips for a week or two, when you feel some pain in your knees will not help. Keeping knees healthy (or staying healthy overall, for that matter) is not something which you can force on yourself. It has to come from within and be a part of your lifestyle. This is the only way you can stay healthy physically without stressing yourself out or hurting your mental health.

Common Orthopedic Problems In Children You Must Know

Common Orthopedic Problems In ...

Having a child is an amazing and life changing experience for every parent. Every child has his or her unique personality and watching them grow is one of the most fulfilling and satisfying experience for any parent.

However, along with the happiness also comes worries. You have to spend so many sleepless nights taking care of your child. Many times, you might notice that your child’s growth is not on the right track and developing few problems along the growth curve. This could be an early alarm to you. Some of these may be a severe condition.

But, you need not panic, as most of these orthopedic conditions are just a small variations in the skeletal structure, and they do not need any treatment. However, it’s important that you take these symptoms seriously and get your child a consultation scheduled with a good orthopedician.

 Pigeon Toed

There are many children who suffer from various orthopedic problems like pigeon toes, toe walking, flat feet etc. In most of the cases, these problems will go away as the child’s bones will grow normally as they age. But sometimes these condition can become complicated as a result of medical conditions.

Here is few common orthopedic problems in children you must know.

Flat feet: This is one of the most common orthopedic problems in growing children. So many babies are born with flat feet every day and tends to develop arches in their feet as they grow. However, in some children, these arches may really never develop. Parents often describe it as “weak ankles”. The ankles seems to turn inward due to the way their feet are planted.

Flat Feet

Flat feet usually do not represent any kind of impairment and doctors only do treatment if it becomes painful. Also doctors don’t recommend any special kind of footwear, such as high-top shoes, as these do not affect arch development. But to reduce foot pain, doctors sometimes insert arch supports into shoes.

Pigeon Toes or In-Toeing: Pigeon toes or walking pigeon toes, medically called as femoral anteversion, is another variation in the way the legs and feet line up. Some babies may have a natural curve in their legs at the age of 8 to 15 months when they begin to stand. Children who have pigeon toes usually walk with their toes inward and often shows internal tibial torsion, wherein, their lower part of the leg is rotated inwards. In some children, this can be related to the medical problem like cerebral palsy. But this occurs very rarely.

Pigeon Toes or In-Toeing

Treatment for in-toeing feet is almost never required. In-toeing doesn’t interfere with running, walking or doing any other activities. This gets resolves on its own as the child grows.

Bowlegs: It is an exaggerated bending inward from the keen down. It’s most common in infants, and generally corrects itself as the child grows older.

Bowlegs that occurs beyond the age of two or children having bowlegged in one leg, may be having a bone disease called rickets or Blount’s disease.

Rickets is caused due to lack of vitamin D or calcium, which causes severe bowing of the legs and can also cause enlargement of the spleen and muscle pain. This can be cured by including vitamin D and calcium in child’s diet. However, some rickets may occured due to genetic condition and may need more specialized treatments.

Blount’s disease generally affects the tibia bone in the lower leg of the child. This is seen when a child reaches two years of age.It can appear suddenly and might worsen very quickly. The cause of this disease is unknown. Blount’s disease causes abnormal growth at the top of the tibia by the knee joint. To cure this, a child might need to go through surgery when he or she is about three or four years old.

Knock – Knees: This problem is known as genu valgum in medical terms. Most of the kids with this problem show moderate tendency towards knock-knees between the age of three and six. This generally happens as the child’s body goes through natural alignment shift during this stage. In most of the cases, treatment is almost never required as the legs get straightened on their own. In some cases, where child faces severe knock-knees, surgery might be recommended, depending upon the health of the child.

Knock - Knees

If your child shows any of these symptoms, or you know any child with any of these orthopedic problem, it is best time to visit an orthopedic specialist, who can treat them well and give them freedom from such problems.

Do you have weak bones? It could be Osteoporosis.

Do you have weak bones? It cou...

Right from cracking your knuckles to waving at someone, from chewing food to lifting things, and all the basic things that you do involuntarily, your bones are always with you. Aren’t they? In every action that the human body does, the bones act as the support. So, when this support goes weak there’s a possibility of something being wrong with your bones. One such possibility is osteoporosis. A common degenerative disorder which makes the bones fragile and brittle.

Osteoporosis: How Does It Begin?
If you look into the literary meaning, the word osteoporosis refers to bones with holes. It strikes in when there is a severe deterioration or loss in the minerals that are responsible for the formation of the bones.

Let’s take a look at what these minerals are.Bones are made of a protein called collagen which contains calcium phosphate and calcium carbonate which give the bones strength and flexibility to be able to give the human body a defined structure and the ability to flex and move.

Apart from the combination of calcium and collagen that builds bones, there are a few other elements in the body that contribute to the strength and functioning of the bones. Basic activities that you perform as a routine can be greatly affected when there’s an imbalance in these elements.

What are they?

Your hormones.

Hormones like testosterone and oestrogen play a significant role in providing strength to the bones. When there is a drop in the levels of oestrogen, it results in the bones becoming weak, and can also cause rampant bone loss. This is mostly seen occurring with growing age, and women are more prone to it as menopause is a huge contributor in reduction of oestrogen.

How Does Osteoporosis Affect Your Daily Life?
Even the smallest of the action becomes a problem. You want to catch a bus and you’re a little away from it, you’d probably struggle to run and reach the bus. Look at another situation: You’re cooking and you find it difficult to hold the spatula. Walking and other random movements that normal people do become extremely painful. The restricted function of your bones makes it difficult to do the simplest of the activities which over time can make you feel miserable and more in pain.

Here are a few symptoms that you might notice when you develop osteoporosis.

  • Restricted mobility with throbbing joint pains.
  • You might be prone to fracturing your wrist, spine and hips, which is the most important and common symptom of developing osteoporosis.
  • Difficulty in chewing – Your dental x-rays might show up with weak or fractured bones in your jaws.

Are You At Risk?
Check your vitals if you are experiencing similar symptoms with aggravated joint pains and weakness. There are many factors that could lead to osteoporosis, and you might not realise until your condition starts to worsen.

Risk of Osteoporosis

  1. Calcium and vitamin D deficiency is one of the most common contributing factors for osteoporosis. You must consult your doctor to fix your vitamin D levels. Foods rich in these minerals can help you keep the risk of developing osteoporosis at bay.
  2. Are you overweight? If yes, then you need to get on your toes. Being overweight can put a lot of pressure on your joints, which can result in a gradual bone loss. Including a certain amount of weight bearing exercises will help you strengthen your bones and muscles that surround your bones.
  3. Do you smoke? The effect of tobacco on the human body has always been a negative one. In case of bone health, there are several researches that state that the use tobacco directly can cause bone loss to some extent. However the impact of smoking on bone health is still not completely proven. But then, it is noticed that women who smoke have menopause much earlier than those who don’t, and early menopause can increase the risk of osteoporosis.
  4. Are you a coffee or a tea addict? Caffeine is also said to be one of the factors that trigger osteoporosis. So, if you are extremely fond of these beverages, you might have to possibly limit your consumption.

So, You Have It. What Do You Do?
If you relate to all of the above, there could be chances that you might develop osteoporosis. Getting yourself screened for osteoporosis can help you figure out if you have it, or if is something else that’s causing you the pain and discomfort. The most common tests that can determine if you have osteoporosis or not are:

  • A bone mineral density test – This test involves X-rays that determine the calcium levels, in your bones, and detects porous bones and fractures.
  • A bone health measurement (DEXA Scan) – A DEXA Scan (Dual X-ray Absorptiometry) is a measures how strong your bones are. The main focus areas of this test are your hips and your spine.

Genetics and Osteoporosis

A genetic disposition plays a crucial role in the development of osteoporosis in a person. So, preventive measures must be taken into consideration at an early age to avoid osteoporosis being diagnosed at a later stage. If osteoporosis runs in your family, you are at a much higher risk of having it. So, nutritious food, regular and well guided exercise and weight training, and certain lifestyle habits can make life easier and free from your bones being brittle. Your doctor will be able to guide you the right way.

Physical therapy to a large extent can help you get relief from pain. It can also help in activating, and strengthening the bones and muscles to work more efficiently. You will have to be on certain specific medications if required. If you are looking for treatments or are looking for more on how to diagnose your condition, we’re right here to get you sorted. So, hurry up and call us now!

In many cases though, a person may need therapy if her or her daily functioning is hampered due to the surgery. In this case, a plan is made by the therapist so that strength is regained and functioning becomes better.

Managing age-related issues: One of the most common age related conditions in people is osteoarthritis. Most of the times, the person goes through a surgery and get a replacement done. Post surgery it is essential to go through physical therapy so that daily functioning of the leg can be improved on and made better in due time.
